How to Handle Sulfur Burps on GLP-1 Medication

5 min read

If you’ve had burps that smell like rotten eggs since starting a GLP-1 medication, you’re not imagining it — and you’re not alone. “Sulfur burps” are a recognised, if unglamorous, side effect. Here’s a practical, judgement-free look at what tends to help.

This is general food-comfort guidance, not medical advice. If symptoms are severe, persistent, or come with vomiting or diarrhoea, talk to your healthcare provider.

Why they happen

GLP-1 medication slows how quickly your stomach empties. Food lingers longer, and certain foods release sulfur-containing gas as they sit. The result is that distinctive rotten-egg smell. It tends to be worse after larger or richer meals.

What tends to help

  • Smaller, lighter meals. Big, heavy meals sit longest. Smaller portions move through more comfortably.
  • Go easy on high-sulfur foods for a bit. Eggs, red meat, garlic, onion, and some cruciferous veg (broccoli, cauliflower) are common culprits. You don’t have to cut them forever — just notice whether easing off helps.
  • Slow down and sit up. Eating slowly and staying upright after meals gives your stomach an easier time.
  • Stay hydrated. Fluids help digestion keep moving.

Our easy-digestion collection and gentle-days meals lean toward lighter options that many people find easier on a rough day.

What to watch for

Sulfur burps on their own are usually just uncomfortable. But if they come alongside severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or diarrhoea, that’s worth a call to your healthcare provider — those can point to something that needs attention.

The honest bit

Everyone’s triggers are a little different. The fastest way to find yours is to pay attention to which meals set them off — and which don’t.
